Essay Sample About Alice Walker Write More About a Novelist

Article Sample About Alice Walker Write More About a Novelist In the late spring of 1952 while playing Cowboys and Indians with her more established siblings, Alice Walker at eight years old years old, was blinded in her correct eye by an errant BB weapon pellet shot by one of her siblings. Alice turned out to be so hesitant about the huge white scar tissue left in her correct eye, that she not, at this point held her head up on the grounds that she felt appalling and embarrassed about herself. At the point when she was fourteen years of age, her sibling Bill had the waterfall expelled for Alice by a specialist in Boston, yet remorsefully her vision stayed away forever. For such a significant number of years Alice Walker needed nothing else except for to be wonderful. At that point one day she recollected what the specialist had said to her, â€Å"Eyes are thoughtful. On the off chance that one is visually impaired, the other will probably become dazzle too.† For so long, Alice had taken what that specialist had said and made it a realit y. She had neglected to take a gander at all the incredible open doors that life offered her and concentrated distinctly on her outward appearance since Alice was so overcome with the significance that society put on excellence. Alice couldn’t acknowledge her own physical inability and this blurred her capacity to live to its fullest. Alice saw things, however she didn’t see them. Until the day her significant other said to her, â€Å"I thought you made harmony with that,† and abruptly she began recollecting the significant things throughout everyday life, similar to the endowment of sight and the chance of never observing and seeing the excellence of the desert. Magnificence is so effectively exaggerated. A ubiquitous trademark, excellence has taken the eye of today’s youth. Today’s corporate publicists are currently directing what excellence is on the grounds that it sells and rakes in boatloads of cash. From an early age, the idea of magnificence is drummed into the brains of today’s youth and the publicists push all the items that will assist them with accomplishing this extreme objective, from haircut, make-up, garments, and body weight. Gone are where a person’s inward magnificence represented far beyond a person’s physical excellence. It was progressively significant on how you styled the expert articulation in your discussions than how you styled your hair. What is it about magnificence that drives everybody to have however a small amount of it? At long last, everything comes down to acknowledgment. Individuals accept that once they are delightful, their companions, their friends and their mates will acknowledge them. The issue is it’s valid generally. Since everybody is so caught up with external excellence that once they discover somebody who has it, they are consequently acknowledged into the social ring. Alice stresses that once she understood that waterfall expelled from her eye, she quickly turned into an alternate individual. She got the man she had always wanted, became valedictorian for her secondary school and was additionally Prom Queen. However now, what is excellence? Here’s what I think; Beauty is a quality or mix of characteristics that gives incredible joy to the faculties or to the psyche and soul. This is the manner in which I accept humanities feeling of excellence has gotten distorted. There are currently too rare sorts of people who discover incredible delight in their internal excellence. Recall the statement: â€Å"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.† I would rather not say it yet I oppose this idea. Perhaps some place along the lines of: â€Å"True excellence no longer issues in anyone’s eyes.† Beauty is generally found in the unforeseen. The day Alice Walker was taking care of her little girl Rebecca is when reality and acknowledgment at long last set in for Alice. Alice was continually agonizing over the day her little girl would find that her mother’s eyes were unique in relation to others. At that point the day came when Rebecca concentrated on her mother’s face. From individual experience, Alice realizes how genuine kids can be in their perceptions and lamented the day when Rebecca would concentrate on her deformed eye. Be that as it may, when Rebecca stated, â€Å"Mommy, there’s a world in your eye,† and â€Å"Mommy, where did you get the world in your eye?† That’s the day Alice at last figured out how to view herself and realize that it was conceivable to cherish that world in her eye and recollecting all the wonderful and significant things in life that had blurred away from her principle center. At long last, Alice took in the genuine estimation of life and what was significant. Since she was a young lady she was generally so used to individuals disclosing to her how charming and lovable she was, until that unpleasant day when she was eight years of age that truly transformed herself for the most exceedingly awful or so she thought. Alice proceeds to state that she would sit before the mirror before hitting the hay and misuse her eye. She would fly off the handle about the amount she loathed her eye and how she wished it would clear up before sun-up. Alice could never appeal to God for sight, just excellence. It demonstrates how a small distortion can nearly destroy a person’s life and how a couple of basic words from another can totally change one’s point of view on everything that an individual grew up accepting. Alice dismissed everything that was essential to her since she was so fixated on her physical appearance as opposed to acknowledging how wonderful i t is simply having the option to see the world through her one great eye. After Alice left her daughter’s room, she longed for a lovely young lady moving and she understands that the delightful young lady in her fantasy was nobody other, than herself.

Control of food in KFC - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 805 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2017/09/18 Category Food Essay Type Argumentative essay Tags: Fast Food Essay Did you like this example? CONTROL OF FOOD QUALITY IN KFC In theory an employer must eliminate risks, or if not control them to the fullest extent possible. In the fast food industry there are certain regulations that are intended to eliminate the risk of bad food quality but these regulations do not eliminate the ability of a fast food outlet to produce food that is harmful to those who consume it. For example the Food Act (2003) and the Food Regulation Act (2004), that cover issues such as food standards and handling operations (The Hills Shire Council, 2009, website) There are two sections needed for successful OHS management in the fast food industry; the appropriate procedures in place and the implementation of them by employees and management. KFC headquarters would have strict policies and practices in place but if management and the employees do not abide by them then they are useless. The hierarchy of control highlights the best option for risk control being elimination. Elimination is t he entire removal of hazards hence there being no risk on health and safety. If elimination cannot be achieved measures should be taken to minimise or control the risk. These include substitution, isolation, engineering, administration and personal protective equipment. Substitution is the use of less hazardous process, plant or substance. Isolation is to separate hazard from the person at risk with distance or time. Engineering is such examples as guards or changing work design. Administration is the organisation of safer work practices, provide training and supervision of OHS. PPE should only be used as a last resort in measures to minimise risk (OHS Risk Management Handout, 2009). KFC upper management would have a solid procedure in place for managing food quality however; due to the recent issues in their outlets a review of the procedure is needed. The Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) is a popular 7 step method that food related industries use to eliminate risk s of poor food quality. KFC should compare and contrast their current practices with the 7 step HACCP. 1. Assess hazards and potential risks 2. Identify control points in contamination, cooking, cooling and hygiene 3. Set up procedures to ensure safety is maintained at critical control points 4. Monitor control points through correct signage, tools and training materials 5. Take corrective action as soon as a critical point is in jeopardy 6. Set up record keeping to log all flow charts and temperature checks 7. Ensure the system is kept up with (Mealey, 2009). KFC is a massively successful organisation and would clearly have policies in place like this to eliminate the occurrence of food quality issues. Therefore the problem must lie within management’s supervision of the OHS and the employee’s motivation to abide by the procedures. This issue should use administration to minimise the risk. This involves organising safer work practices, providing training, instru ction and supervision of OHS practices. The most prominent point here is the instruction and supervision by management. The KFC line managers or duty managers are important is ensuring that all work practices are safe in the preparation and serving of the food in their restaurants. Workers in fast food chains are often younger, have lower literacy rates, less motivated, earn less money and are less experienced therefore they posses less attention and knowledge of safety (Stellman, 1998, p. 8. 2). This reinforces the fact that line managers play an essential role in enforcing safety is controlled in the KFC kitchens. Colleen discusses how safety in food is heavily focused on manager’s role in motivating employees to abide by safety standards. There are six motivational areas for supervisors to focus on when attempting to achieve optimal OHS in terms of food quality. They are: 1. Establishing policy and standards 2. Expecting accountability 3. Serving as role models 4. Controll ing rewarding or punishing 5. Providing training 6. Providing resources Through looking into the demographics of the workers in fast food chains and the attitudes they posses towards safety, the use of supervisors is critical in maintaining health and safety in the KFC kitchen. If these supervisors can abide by the 6 measures of motivation above then safety will become much more evident. These motivational tools should be used in combination with the 7 step HACCP process as well as procedures KFC would already have in place such as; induction training, refresher training, record keeping and random health checks. Beowolf The Epic Poem Essay Example For Students

Beowolf The Epic Poem Essay The epic poem Beowulf describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times. The hero, Beowulf, is a seemingly invincible person with all the extraordinary traits required of a hero. He is able to use his super-human physical strength and courage to put his people before himself. He encounters hideous monsters and the most ferocious of beasts but he never fears the threat of death. His leadership skills are superb and he is even able to boast about all his achievements. Beowulf is the ultimate epic hero who risks his life countless times for immortal glory and for the good of others. Beowulf is a hero in the eyes of his fellow men through his amazing physical strength. He fought in numerous battles and returned victorious from all but his last. In his argument with Unferth, Beowulf explains the reason he lost a simple swimming match with his youthful opponent Brecca. Not only had Beowulf been swimming for seven nights, he had also stopped to kill nine sea creatures in the depths of the ocean. Beowulf is also strong enough to kill the monster Grendel, who has been terrorizing the Danes for twelve years, with his bare hands by ripping off his arm. When Beowulf is fighting Grendels mother, who is seeking revenge on her sons death, he is able to slay her by slashing the monsters neck with a Giants sword that can only be lifted by a person as strong as Beowulf. When he chops off her head, he carries it from the ocean with ease, but it takes four men to lift and carry it back to Herot mead-hall. This strength is a key trait of Beowulfs heroism. Another heroic trait of Beowulf is his ability to put his peoples welfare before his own. Beowulfs uncle is king of the Geats so he is sent as an emissary to help rid the Danes of the evil Grendel. Beowulf risks his own life for the Danes, asking help from no one. He realizes the dangers but fears nothing for his own life. After Beowulf had served his people as King of the Geats for fifty years, he goes to battle one last time to fight a horrible dragon who is frightening all of his people. Beowulf is old and tired but he defeats the dragon in order to protect his people. Even in death he wished so secure safety for the Geats so a tall lighthouse is built in order to help the people find there way back from sea. The most heroic of traits within Beowulf is that he is not afraid to die. He always explains his death wishes before going into battle and requests to have any assets delivered to his people. And if death does take me, send the hammered mail of my armor to Higlac, return the inheritance I had from Hrehtel, and from Wayland. Fate will unwind as it must! 18 He is aware of the heroic paradox; he will be glorified  in life or death for his actions. He knows that when he fights an enemy like Grendel or Grendels mother he will achieve immortality as the victor or the loser. When we crossed the sea, my comrades and I, I already knew that all my purpose was this: to win the good will of your people or die in battle, pressed in Grendels fierce grip. Let me live in greatness and courage, or here in this hall welcome my death! 22 Even with the enormous amount of confidence Beowulf possesses, he underezds that Fate or Wyrd will work its magic no matter what and he could be killed at any point in his life. He faces that reality by showing no fear and preparing for a positive or a fatal outcome. .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 , .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .postImageUrl , .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 , .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520:hover , .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520:visited , .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520:active { border:0!important; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520:active , .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520 .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubfef8c2cd4e9ccc468eb169995e81520:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Poetic Terminology EssayBeowulf is the prime example of an epic hero.
